The armature, also known as the rotor, is the rotating part of the motor where mechanical power is generated.
The commutator is a segmented cylindrical structure attached to the armature shaft. It is critical for directional current flow in the motor windings.
Carbon brushes or graphite brushes make sliding contact with the rotating commutator.
The stator is the stationary part of the motor and provides the magnetic field that interacts with the current in the armature to produce motion.
The housing or frame of the motor serves both mechanical and thermal purposes.
The shaft is a mechanical component that transmits the motor’s rotational energy to the application (e.g., wheels, gears, or pulleys).
Bearings are crucial in minimizing friction and wear as the shaft rotates.
The end bells cover the front and rear sides of the motor and house the bearing seats.
When power is applied, current flows through the brushes to the commutator and into the armature windings. The interaction between the magnetic field of the stator and the current-carrying conductors in the armature produces rotational torque. The commutator and brushes continually switch current direction, ensuring continuous rotation. All components must function in harmony to ensure efficiency, low noise, and long service life.
Brush DC motors are used across various sectors due to their simple control requirements, cost-effectiveness, and availability.
