Introduction to DC Motor Rotor and Its Functions by Jkongmotor


The DC motor is a crucial component in various industries and applications where precise control of speed and torque is required. Among its key elements are the stator and rotor. The stator, the stationary part of the motor, and the rotor, the rotating part, work together to generate electromagnetic torque and induce electromotive force. The rotor, in particular, plays a vital role in energy conversion within the DC motor, acting as the hub for this process. Often referred to as the armature, the rotor is composed of components such as the shaft, armature core, armature winding, commutator, and fan.

1. Armature Core

The armature core serves as the primary component of the main magnetic circuit and houses the armature winding. Typically made from laminated silicon steel sheets, each around 0.5mm thick, the armature core is stacked to reduce eddy current and hysteresis losses during motor operation. The laminated core is securely fixed onto the shaft or rotor frame. The outer circumference of the core features armature slots where the armature winding is embedded.

2. Armature Winding

The armature winding is responsible for generating electromagnetic torque and inducing electromotive force, making it a critical component for energy transformation in the DC motor. Comprising multiple coils connected in a specific pattern, the winding is made from high-strength enameled wire or flat copper wire with a glass covering. The coils are arranged in the armature slots in upper and lower layers, with proper insulation between the coils and the core. To prevent the centrifugal force from throwing the coil ends out of the slots, slot wedges are used for fixation. The protruding ends of the coils are securely bound with heat-cured glass tape.

3. Commutator

In a DC motor, the commutator, coupled with brushes, converts the external DC power into alternating current within the armature coils, ensuring a constant direction of electromagnetic torque. In a DC generator, the commutator, also paired with brushes, transforms the alternating electromotive force induced in the armature coils into direct current output through the positive and negative brushes. The commutator consists of multiple commutator segments arranged in a cylindrical shape, insulated by mica sheets.

4. Shaft

The shaft provides support for the rotation of the rotor, requiring adequate mechanical strength and rigidity. Typically machined from solid round steel, the shaft is essential for maintaining the stability and balance of the rotor during operation.
